Rebreather Travel Tip: Clothing

Even though you are traveling to a tropical destination, there are some things to think about in regards to clothing. Mexico has a dreaded “Chichin” tree that instantaneously turns your arms into something akin to cheese pizza, if you skin comes in contact with sap. The Bahamas has evil “Poisonwood.” Take it from a girl who has had poison ivy in pretty strange places, wear long pants and sleeves in the jungle. No matter how hot, you will save yourself from things that bite, burn and crawl. Flea and tick shampoo is excellent for dealing with small seed ticks. Bring some along if you will be traversing wild spaces. 

Many countries have much more conservative dress codes than Americans may be accustomed to. Visiting a church in most countries requires long pants or head-scarves for women. Women should not have exposed legs or arms in Egypt. Hats may not be worn in restaurants in many countries. Ensure that you have the right clothes to accommodate local customs.

Your diving gear should be carefully planned too. If you are a cave diver trekking to site, it may be over uneven ground. Solid dive boots are critical. Even shore diving may take divers over rough terrain. Think in advance and leave the 3mm floppy boots at home.--Jill Heinerth
