I get questions from OC and CCR divers from the world over. Click on the "Ask Jill" link in the sidebar and I'll be happy to reply--Here's a topic that comes up often:
Hi Jill
… I have on
question about CCR that perhaps you can help me with. I work on a large motor yacht that travels all over which allows me to dive in some awesome places. However, none of the guys that I dive with on a regular basis dive CCR… Can I safely dive on CCR with OC divers if I brief my OC buddy on the safety and contingency procedures, or is this considered a no-no?

This is a greatly debated topic, but I find no reason why you should not dive with an OC buddy. It is important to brief them on a few things
:
1. Practice air sharing (a long hose on your bailout bottle is a perfect solution).
2. Show them where your inflator is located (in the event they need to assist you with buoyancy).
3. Show them how to close the loop if it is found out of your mouth.
Beyond that, if there is interest, you can cover things like rescue simulations, reading displays, lights and alarms.
The most important thing is to understand that they are likely to plead ignorance on rebreathers and it is incumbent on you to ensure that you are both capable of self-rescue and buddy-rescue scenarios before embarking on the dive.
All the best.
Jill
